Manage Subjects

Use the Configuration tab in the Curriculum Manager module to manage the different subjects in your school. Create as many subjects as you need and name them to suit your requirements.

To manage subjects:

  1. Open the Curriculum Manager and select the Configuration tab.
  2. Select Manage Subjects from the right hand menu:

    • All subjects are listed here.
    • Icons indicate properties for each subject properties. The properties displayed and how they are displayed is determined by the settings in entity preferences.
  4. Use the drop-down in the top right of the screen to change the Group By setting if required.
  5. Use the filters and navigation tools to display the subjects that you want to work with.
  6. Choose to:

Add a subject

  1. Select Add Subject in the top left of the screen to display the Manage Subjects window:
  2. Complete the fields displayed in the Subject Properties tab:

    Subject Properties

    Enter a clear and concise name, code and description for the subject.

    Subject Options

    Use the drop downs to status of the subject. Selecting 'Yes' for either of the options disables the drop-down for the other. Selecting 'No' for both options causes the subject to be listed as 'Future'.

    Subject Publication Options

    Enter an email address and website for this subject.

  3. Work through the Departments/Heads/Teachers tabs:
  4. Select the departments/heads/teachers to link with the subject.
  5. Select Save & Close.The new subject is listed.

Change the order of subjects

Change the order that subjects are displayed in Ed:gen.

  1. Select Order Subjects . The Arrange Curriculum Subjects window is displayed:
  2. Select a subject and use the arrows to move it up or down the list.
  3. Select Save & Close to close this window and return to the Manage Subjects screen.

Update subject entity preferences

Update the entities displayed for subjects. For example, choose to display subject Description in the Manage Subjects screen grid.

Your entity preferences can also be configured centrally from the Manage Module Entities option.

  1. Select the table icon at the top left of the screen to display the Edit Module Entity window:
    • The Entity Properties tab displays an overview of your entity preferences.
    • The four following tabs hold property details for the entity. A count next to the tab title indicates the number of selections made in the tab.
    • The Audit tab lists any amendments that have been made to the entity.
  2. In the Entity Properties tab:
    • Entity Properties cannot be changed.
    • It is not recommended that you make any changes to Export & Import Options.
    • Filter Options indicate the number of rows displayed if filters are used for the entity. The example below has 6 rows in the filter:
  3. Work through the tabs shown to set details for the entity:
  4. Choose to change the order that any of your entity selections are displayed in the module.
    1. Select Order Entity xxx in your selected tab. A popup window is displayed, an example is shown below:
    2. Select to make a selection and use the arrows to move it up or down the list.
    3. Select Save & Close to close this window and return to the Edit Module Entity window.
  5. Any changes made to entities are listed under the Audit tab in the window:
  6. Select Save & Close to close the Edit Module Entity window. Your preferences are displayed in the Manage Subjects screen.

Copy a subject

Choose to copy a subject. This is useful for recreating a subject.

  1. Scroll to the subject that you want to copy and click the copy subject icon. A popup window is displayed:
  2. Complete the fields displayed in the Subject Properties tab:

  5. Select Save & Close.The subject is displayed in the Manage Subjects screen.

Edit a subject

Update the details of a subject if required. For example, change the active status of a subject.

  1. Scroll to the subject that you want to edit and click the edit icon. The Manage Subjects window is displayed:

  3. Work through the Departments/Heads/Teachers tabs:
  4. Select the departments/heads/teachers to link with the subject.
  5. Three other tabs are available, these are explained as follows:
    • Metadata. Any metadata fields set up for subjects are listed here. Add values for the metadata fields as required.
    • Child Entities. Shows a count of areas of the module linked to the selected subject.
    • Audit. Any changes made to the subject are listed here.
  6. Select Save & Close.The amended subject is listed.

Delete a subject

Remove a subject that has been added in error.

You cannot delete a subject which is in use.

  1. Scroll to the subject that you want to delete and click the delete icon. You are prompted Are you sure you want to delete this subject?
  2. Select Yes.
  3. The subject is removed. A log is kept under the Logging tab for auditing purposes.
