Return in use – please try later?

Introduction

Return in use is a warning message and is usually caused by another user actually using the Tax Return, as only one user is allowed in a Tax Return at any one time. It is also possible that there may have been a system error that has locked the file (that is, the client). There is no point in trying to work on the client on other machines, as the same lock will arise.

Listed below are the possible solutions.

The first step is to check whether it's the machine that originally had the problem that is locking the file.

  1. Go to the computer that had the original problem and make sure that IRIS has been closed down on this computer. Click CTRL + ALT + DEL – two possible screens – close programs or task manager displays.

  1. If W32MKDE.EXE does not show in the processes/close programs screen Pervasive SQL is being used. If this is the case, make sure that everyone comes out of IRIS and follow the fact sheet titled Stopping and Starting Pervasive Services which is attached.

  2. The next step would be to reboot all PCs on the network that have been using Iris. Then you would go to the server and check for Open Files. Click START then CONTROL PANEL. In here choose the Server icon, then the In Use tab. Highlight any Iris files, and use the Close Resources button. Now start a PC and see if you can access the client.

If you still cannot access the client, you have no choice but to reboot the server, after you have turned off all PCs connected to the network.

  1. If for any reason, the above do not solve this problem, give personal tax support a call, and we will talk you through recovering a file called Isol2006.ttl. Please mention this file or fact sheet when you call.

Stopping and Starting Pervasive Services

Stopping and starting the Pervasive services has almost the same effect for IRIS as rebooting the server, although stopping and starting the services will only affect IRIS users, therefore causing less disruption on the network and allowing others to continue working.

To stop and start the Pervasive Services, you will need to be located PHYSICALLY at the server console and logged in as administrator.

Firstly, ensure that everybody is logged completely out of IRIS. This includes all menus, timesheets, Practice Management, and so forth.

On a Windows 2000/2003 Server

Click: Start | Settings | Control Panel | Administrative Tools> Services

On Windows NT4 Server

Click: Start | Settings >|Control Panel | Services

Scroll down to the Pervasive services and select the first Pervasive service (relational), double click on this service. Click Stop and repeat this for the second service Pervasive (transactional). Both services should now be stopped.

To start the services, double-click on Pervasive (relational) service and then click Start; now do the same for Pervasive (transactional).
